From the recording The Living Waters

The Living Waters
You can’t make this stuff up.
Every once in a while, something happens that stops you in your tracks and changes the way you see the world. The Living Waters was born from one of those moments.
I was present when my dear friend Brook experienced what I can only describe as a profound outpouring of Spirit. In that moment, Mary Magdalene spoke to her as a sister, and from the experience came three extraordinarily simple exclamations of union:
My Heart is Your Heart.
Your Heart is My Heart.
Our Hearts Beat as One.
I have repeated those words thousands of times since. Yet their power, for me, lies in their simplicity. They speak of Now. Presence. Love. Union with the Holy. Nothing to chase, and nowhere we have to go. The invitation is simply to become present enough to recognize what may already be flowing through us.
That experience made me think about the ancient spiritual symbolism of water. From water in the wilderness in the story of Moses to sacred springs associated with places such as Fatima, water has repeatedly symbolized divine provision, renewal, healing, and life. And the image reaches far beyond any single religious tradition. Wherever human beings have lived, water has meant life.
But perhaps the Living Water represents something even greater than survival.
Perhaps it represents the difference between merely surviving life and fully participating in it, entering into a conscious, loving, co-creative relationship with Spirit and with one another.
And that is what I witnessed through Brook.
Her name itself became part of the metaphor. A brook does not create the water. It does not possess the water or command where it must go. It simply becomes a pathway through which the water can flow.
What a beautiful image of spiritual presence.
Maybe that is something we can all become: not owners of the sacred, but open channels for Love; not people trying to manufacture miracles, but human beings present enough to recognize the miracle already moving among us.
Perfect Love manifesting.
Perfect Presence manifesting.
Perfect Partnership manifesting.
Thank you, Mary Magdalene.
And thank you, Brook, for being the beautiful soul you are and for becoming, in that extraordinary moment, a place through which the Living Waters of Spirit could flow into the world.
From that experience came this song:
“The Living Waters”
A song about Brook. A song about Spirit. And ultimately, a song about every one of us, because the rivers may be many, but the Living Water is One.

Lyrics

The Living Waters
[Flowing water. Fingerpicked guitar, piano, distant cello.]
[Verse 1]
There are moments no one plans for,
No hand could rearrange,
When the ordinary opens
And nothing stays the same.
We were gathered there together,
Listening heart to heart,
When something flowed through Brook that evening
And tore the veil apart.
Mary spoke to her as sister,
Tender, simple, true,
And the Living Water found a way
To come pouring through.
[Pre-Chorus]
And I sat there as a witness,
Knowing something had begun.
Three simple lines became a river,
And the many became One.
[Chorus]
My Heart is Your Heart.
Your Heart is My Heart.
Our Hearts Beat as One.
Like water rising in the desert,
Like morning meeting sun.
No distance left between us,
No place where Love can't run.
My Heart is Your Heart.
Your Heart is My Heart.
Our Hearts Beat as One.
You can't make this stuff up,
You can only stand in wonder
When the Living Water comes.
[Verse 2]
Water sprang within the desert
When a people thirsted there.
Sacred springs have risen from the earth
Like an answered prayer.
Across the years, across traditions,
Whatever name we call the Divine,
Water carries life among us,
Crossing every place and time.
But this was more than surviving,
More than simply getting through.
This was Spirit meeting Presence,
Making something whole and new.
Not someday.
Not somewhere.
Not when the journey's done.
Now.
The Holy here among us.
The many becoming One.
[Chorus]
My Heart is Your Heart.
Your Heart is My Heart.
Our Hearts Beat as One.
Perfect Love becoming Presence,
Perfect Presence becoming One.
No reaching toward some distant heaven,
The Holy had already come.
You can't make this stuff up,
You can only open wider
When the Living Water comes.
[Verse 3]
Brook, perhaps your name was always
A little prophecy in song,
A quiet stream that carries life
And gently moves along.
A brook does not possess the water,
Never tells the river, "Stay."
It simply gives the water passage
And sends it on its way.
And that's what I saw within you:
No claiming what had come.
Just a beautiful soul wide open
When the Living Water chose to run.
[Bridge , Orchestra Rising]
Maybe this is how worlds change,
Not with kingdoms, crowns, or swords,
But one heart recognizing another
Through a handful of perfect words.
Maybe healing is the river.
Maybe Presence is the rain.
Maybe Love keeps finding pathways
Through our joy and through our pain.
And when one heart becomes the doorway,
When one soul says, "Come on through,"
The ancient river enters time
And makes the world anew.
[Final Chorus , Full Orchestra and Choir]
MY HEART IS YOUR HEART!
YOUR HEART IS MY HEART!
OUR HEARTS BEAT AS ONE!
Let the Living Water carry us
Beyond what we've become.
Through every faith and every people,
Every daughter, every son,
A thousand rivers journey onward,
But the Living Water's One.
We don't own it.
We don't command it.
We simply let it run.
We become still.
We become open.
We become present.
We become One.
[Outro , Piano, Guitar, Flowing Water]
Thank you, Mary Magdalene,
For the river and the song.
Thank you, Brook, for being open
When the Living Water came along.
My Heart is Your Heart.
Your Heart is My Heart.
Our Hearts Beat as One.
You can't make this stuff up.
You can only stand in wonder
When the Living Water comes.
